Per me, la migliore "trilogia" di sempre, anche se non è corretto definirla trilogia, in quanto non sono legati tra loro, e anche perchè, come tutti sapete, dovrebbe uscire un 4° episodio!
3 CULT ASSOLUTI, IMPERDIBILI!!!! Non ricordo nemmeno quante volte li ho visti. Li considero tutti alla pari (tranne forse Il Tempio Maledetto che ha qualcosa in meno rispetto agli altri due), ma il mio preferito resta L'ultima Crociata per la presenza di Sean Connery, uno dei miei attori preferiti!

L’abbiamo atteso per anni in DVD e finalmente è arrivato: è I predatori dell’arca perduta, capostipite di una delle più famose trilogie del cinema, seconda solo a quella di Guerre Stellari. Nel primo capitolo conosciamo il Dr. Jones, interpretato da un Harrison Ford al massimo della forma e archeologo di fama mondiale alle prese con un’impresa “estrema”: ritrovare la leggendaria Arca dell’Alleanza prima che lo facciano i nazisti. Come è facile intuire, un progetto del genere porta con sé insidie, trappole mortali e tanta, tanta avventura. I predatori dell’arca perduta non è solo un bel film, magari entusiasmante e divertente, ma un vero e proprio modello, il riferimento per i film d’avventura delle generazioni successive. E non potrebbe essere stato diversamente: Indiana Jones affascina per uno spunto interessante, che coinvolge senza risultare eccessivamente complesso, tiene gli spettatori incollati alla sedia mentre si prepara all’ottimo epilogo. In tutto ciò, emerge la capacità di mescolare avventura e umorismo, che spezza la tensione e ci introduce in una nuova insidia, alla ricerca della leggendaria Arca. In attesa del secondo capitolo…

Il primo capitolo delle avventure di Indiana Jones è disponibile solo come parte del cofanetto dedicato all’archeologo più famoso del cinema. Questo porta con sè una conseguenza positiva e una negativa: è un peccato non poterlo acquistare singolarmente, ma al tempo stesso Paramount ha potuto sfruttare tutto lo spazio disponibile sul disco per il film, dedicando agli extra della trilogia un DVD a parte (il quarto); tutto ciò può determinare felici conseguenze in termini di resa audio/video. Al momento del lancio italiano, Paramount confermò il mancato remix 5.1 della traccia nostrana, cosa che invece è puntualmente accaduta alla versione originale in lingua inglese. Per il resto, nessun problema: video anamorfico e sottotitoli “giusti” lo rendono un prodotto da prendere in seria considerazione. Gli extra sono contenuti nel quarto disco, che comunque viene da noi considerato ai fini della valutazione di ogni capitolo della trilogia. Dopo il passaggio attraverso un menù animato suggestivo ma tecnicamente non all’altezza della situazione, esaminiamo la qualità audio/video: premesso che attribuire una valutazione sintetica alla qualità d’immagine è stato veramente complesso, siamo comunque su livelli più che sufficienti. Si tratta infatti di un film datato, al quale si può perdonare qualche flessione qualitativa: il video parte in modo un po’ tentennante sui titoli di testa, con una discreta grana sui fondali che limita la percezione del particolare, ma si risolleva dopo pochi istanti giungendo a livelli decisamente apprezzabili: sempre considerando l’origine risalente al 1981, il livello di dettaglio non porge il fianco a critiche, facendo risaltare i particolari dei visi, degli sfondi e dei suggestivi paesaggi in cui si svolgono le vicende. La resa cromatica è naturale e non subisce particolari flessioni, se non in qualche accostamento non precisissimo. Ma si tratta di piccole cose. Azzeccati anche i contrasti, sempre netti e precisi, e molto buona la pulizia del quadro, mentre una luminosità lievemente sotto tono potrebbe essere dettata da ponderate scelte artistiche. Come anticipato, in alcuni momenti (si considerino gli spostamenti aerei di Jones sulla mappa), la situazione subisce dei cali qualitativi, che si manifestano soprattutto in un discreto quantitativo di grana che ricorda le primissime inquadrature. Non si tratta di un problema imputabile al DVD, ma è comunque inevitabile un certo calo di dettaglio. La compressione risente invece dell’ampio spazio a disposizione su disco, conseguenza dell’assenza di extra: tutto ciò fa sì che non si riscontrino particolari limiti imputabili alla compressione, che in alcune circostanze si vede con i “soliti” artefatti ma la cui potenzialità “distruttiva” nei confronti del quadro è più che limitata. In definitiva, un quadro che, nonostante alcune oscillazioni, è chiaramente appagante, soprattutto per un film del 1981. Passiamo all’audio: se è vero che la traccia italiana non ha subito alcun intervento di remix multicanale, è parimenti vero che il risultato è comunque apprezzabile. La traccia italiana è tutt’altro che statica e “bloccata” sul centrale, ma riesce a coinvolgere con disinvoltura lo spettatore mediante l’uso accorto delle potenzialità della codifica. Il centrale è ovviamente il perno del messaggio sonoro e restituisce un dialogo perfettamente intelligibile e senza limiti realmente invalidanti, se non un po’ di “secchezza” timbrica che è causata dagli anni del film. Si nota però, anche se la portata del fenomeno non è massiccia, una certa tendenza alla saturazione, soprattutto nei momenti più concitati. La traccia italiana è comunque discreta, sfrutta i canali di cui dispone e non è troppo diversa dalla versione 5.1, presa diretta esclusa.

Fuggito fortunosamente da Shangai con il piccolo Short (Jonathan Ke Quan) e la cantante Willie (Kate Capshaw), Indiana Jones si ritrova casualmente in uno sperduto villaggio dell’India. Qui apprende che l’oscuro maharaja Zalim Singh, seguace di un culto dedito a sacrifici umani in favore della dea Kali, ha rubato la pietra sacra del villaggio e rapito tutti i bambini. In realtà, scopriranno i nostri eroi, anche lo stesso Zalim Singh è un bambino sotto l’incantesimo dello stregone Mola Ram, che è alla ricerca delle pietre perdute di Sankara, in grado di portare fortuna e gloria a chi le possiede. Dei tre film, Il tempio maledetto è indubbiamente quello meno riuscito; molto più cupo degli altri due, questo episodio è stato realizzato, per stessa ammissione degli autori, riutilizzando le idee scartate per I predatori dell’arca perduta e lo si vede dalla trama, molto più semplice ed estremamente esile rispetto agli altri film della serie. In ogni caso non mancano momenti decisamente riusciti, come i primi 15 minuti introduttivi, la spassosa cena al palazzo del maharaja e lo spettacolare inseguimento ‘ferroviario’ nelle miniere.

Il secondo capitolo della trilogia di Indiana Jones viene pubblicato con le stesse caratteristiche tecniche degli altri due titoli: supporto a doppio strato, audio italiano stereo surround, inglese in Dolby Digital 5.1, video anamorfico nel rispetto del formato cinematografico originale, nessun extra aggiuntivo oltre a quelli contenuti sul quarto disco del cofanetto. L’attesa per questo DVD è stata lunghissima e quindi le aspettative sono cresciute a dismisura. Ci avviciniamo però alla recensione di questo titolo ben consapevoli di trovarci comunque di fronte a un film del 1986. Una certa delusione arriva comunque dai menù, animati certo, ma la grafica poteva essere curata senza dubbio meglio per un titolo tanto importante. Avviata la riproduzione, la prima cosa che stupisce è la notevole pulizia delle immagini: non un solo segno è visibile, come se si trattasse di un film di recentissima produzione. La sequenza di apertura mostra un buon livello di dettaglio su tutto il quadro, che permette di apprezzare al meglio i particolari dei costumi in primo piano, e parametri principali dell’immagine su livelli ottimali. Durante la visione su televisore possiamo apprezzare la buona resa dei rossi dei titoli di testa e contorni estremamente precisi e incisivi, ma a circa 2 minuti e mezzo compare forse l’unico errore di compressione evidente di tutto il disco: un fotogramma con notevoli effetti di blocking sul mantello rosso di Willie. Anche la visione su grande schermo mostra in realtà qualche macroblocco di troppo sui rossi dei titoli di testa, ma si tratta degli unici difetti di una certa entità visibili. Da qui in avanti è possibile osservare un perfetto livello del nero (l’inseguimento notturno in automobile rivela un ottimo bilanciamento di luminosità e contrasto) nelle scene più scure, mentre in generale è la profondità d’immagine che sorprende maggiormente, segno di una buona resa del dettaglio più fine. Soprattutto nelle scene in interni le figure principali si staccano con estrema incisività dai fondali, mentre in quelli in esterni l’immagine si fa solo lievemente un po’ più impastata. Anche il rumore video è davvero ridotto e solo nelle sequenze in cui compaiono (per l’epoca) elaborati effetti ottici si può notare un ispessimento della grana della pellicola. Solo in un paio di sequenze (ad esempio su un dettaglio del gommone giallo) si scorge un leggero effetto di trascinamento dovuto però, a nostro parere, allo stesso lavoro di telecine/restauro piuttosto che alla compressione che, grazie anche all’elevato bit rate medio, a parte le imperfezioni già descritte in apertura di film, non lascia quasi mai intravedere i suoi effetti. Questi sono visibili per lo più durante la visione da proiettore, dove le dimensioni dello schermo lasciano intravedere alcuni piccolissimi artefatti di tipo ‘ringing’ in prossimità di alcuni contorni principali. La scelta da parte della LucasFilm di non rimasterizzare la traccia italiana in 5.1 è stato l’aspetto tecnico più criticato di questa uscita, ma in realtà si è rivelata una scelta vincente. Non ce ne vogliano gli amanti del multicanale a tutti i costi, ma il Dolby Surround con cui è proposto il film su DVD, oltre a essere il formato originale con cui uscì nelle sale, è assolutamente dignitoso, soprattutto viste le caratteristiche della rimasterizzazione della traccia originale. L’audio italiano risulta infatti fin dalle prime battute particolarmente pulito e dotato di un fronte anteriore sufficientemente ampio. La risposta è piuttosto squillante sulle alte, conferendo un suono decisamente squillante e forse un po’ troppo ‘secco’. Nonostante la gamma bassa sia un po’ in ombra, le musiche godono di una resa piuttosto buona mentre i dialoghi sono quelli che soffrono di più l’effetto del tempo. All’ascolto è evidente che stato effettuato un degno lavoro di pulizia sui nastri originali, ma i dialoghi suonano comunque poco profondi e a tratti aspri, con una tendenza alla saturazione (che non viene mai raggiunta in pieno), soprattutto nella prima parte. La nostra traccia rimane comunque a nostro avviso godibilissima e per ottenere una qualità migliore l’unica strada sarebbe sicuramente stata quella (deprecabile) del ridoppiaggio. Il canale surround infine non si fa mai sentire con decisione, se non con un lievissimo effetto ambienza ma nulla più. A livello di mix, però, la traccia originale non si discosta molto. Dove il 5.1 inglese risulta migliore è nel suono più ricco di basse frequenze (non solo a livello di effetti sonori, ma anche di resa della colonna sonora), e una migliore separazione dei canali dell’asse frontale, che permette di dare maggiore omogeneità e più profondità alla scena sonora. I dialoghi sono più puliti, meno aspri e più corposi rispetto a quelli italiani e in generale meglio inseriti all’interno della scena. I canali posteriori, infine, offrono un’ambienza più marcata rispetto alla traccia nostrana, ma nulla più.

Le avventure sono ambientate nel 1938, molti anni dopo il tentativo di un giovanissimo Indiana Jones (interpretato da River Phoenix) di recuperare la leggendaria croce di Coronado, sottratta ai ladri e riportata al legittimo proprietario, Marcus Brody, curatore del Museo e “capo” di Indy (sempre interpretato da Denholm Elliott), ad opera di un più maturo e ormai professore di archelogia Indiana Jones. Tornato dunque alla sua cattedra in un college del New England, Jones viene ingaggiato dagli uomini del multimiliardario americano Walter Donovan, entrato in possesso di una misteriosa pietra, probabile indizio che potrebbe condurre al luogo ove è custodito il Sacro Graal. Ma l’uomo che l’ha trovata, il professor Henry Jones (Sean Connery) - il massimo esperto del Sacro Graal nonché padre di Indy - è misteriosamente scomparso. Indiana “Junior” si precipita così a Venezia alla ricerca del padre, e trova la bella dottoressa Elsa Schneider (Alison Doody), ma i due se la dovranno vedere con i Templari, pronti a tutto pur di difendere il miracoloso e leggendario calice. Quando uno di loro rivela a Jones che il padre viene tenuto prigioniero in un castello in Austria, Indy e Elsa corrono a liberarlo. Insieme al fido Sallah (John Rhys-Davis), i due correranno e cavalcheranno le grandi dune del deserto della Turchia, attraverseranno la Germania braccati dai nazisti, affrontando insieme ogni genere di spettacolari e rischiose avventure, con la consueta spavalderia e coraggio comuni a padre e figlio, a bordo di barche, auto, cavalli, cammelli e persino uno Zeppelin, fino a confrontarsi con l’avventura più grande, al cospetto del calice conteso dai nazisti, giunti sul posto. Ritmo incalzante, spirito eroico, ironia, dialoghi arguti e spettacolarità alle stelle sono gli ingredienti ottimamente dosati da Spielberg e rafforzati da un montaggio incalzante e da effetti speciali ancor più spettacolari (made in ILM), esaltati dall’ormai mitica colonna sonora di John Williams. Successo scontato per l’archeologo spavaldo e affascinante: non rimane che prepararsi all’ultima avventura, attesa per il 2005.

è l’episodio più nuovo, ma il trattamento è lo stesso riservato agli altri episodi: audio italiano in stereo surround e audio inglese multicanale, con un menù animato che ricalca stilisticamente quello di tutta la trilogia e una qualità video davvero buona. Partiamo proprio dai menù, l’aspetto che ci è piaciuto meno. La grafica, anche se animata, sembra davvero banale: un filtro di stilizzazione applicato alle immagini e animazioni un po’ forzate e poco piacevoli. Considerata l’importanza del titolo, sicuramente qualcosa di meglio si riusciva a fare. Il puntatore poi non è troppo visibile sui TV di piccole dimensioni, e potrebbe creare qualche problema. Ma passiamo alla parte che forse più interessa, quella della qualità vera e propria. Il film è il più recente dei tre e la qualità video lo dimostra: al di là del restauro perfetto la qualità è davvero elevata, così come la compressione. Ottimo il bilanciamento delle tinte, le sfumature sulle alte luci e la profondità del nero: sembra veramente un film girato pochi anni fa. Sotto il fattore della compressione riscontriamo una situazione media: solo in qualche occasione particolarmente difficile vengono alla luce piccoli artefatti di compressione, ma non si tratta, come potrebbero credere molti, di situazioni a bassa luminosità, bensì alcune scene in interno e soprattutto sugli sfondi. L’esempio più lampante è l’aula di università ai primi capitoli, dove sullo sfondo del dottor Jones percepiamo un piccolo brulichio di pixel. Nulla comunque di allarmante, anzi, un quadro generale davvero notevole. Altra grande sorpresa è rappresentata dall’audio: anche se si tratta di semplice surround è molto coinvolgente e ben codificato, pulito e perfettamente equalizzato. La separazione dei canali è notevole, anche per quanto riguarda il reparto posteriore, non discreto. Basta ascoltare le sequenze finali, con la scena del combattimento aereo, per realizzare come la codifica matriciale viene sfruttata al massimo delle sue potenzialità. Si percepisce subito che non si tratta di una traccia recente, è un po’ secca e asciutta, tuttavia è davvero godibile e non presta il fianco a critiche. Le differenze con la versione originale non sono marcatissime, anche se forse in questo caso forse il fronte posteriore gode di un impatto maggiore rispetto a quanto accade con i primi due film. La traccia inglese gode di dialoghi un po’ più pieni, merito indubbiamente della presa diretta e di un controllo migliore sulle basse frequenze.
