Le avventure sono ambientate nel 1938, molti anni dopo il tentativo di un giovanissimo Indiana Jones (interpretato da River Phoenix) di recuperare la leggendaria croce di Coronado, sottratta ai ladri e riportata al legittimo proprietario, Marcus Brody, curatore del Museo e “capo” di Indy (sempre interpretato da Denholm Elliott), ad opera di un più maturo e ormai professore di archelogia Indiana Jones. Tornato dunque alla sua cattedra in un college del New England, Jones viene ingaggiato dagli uomini del multimiliardario americano Walter Donovan, entrato in possesso di una misteriosa pietra, probabile indizio che potrebbe condurre al luogo ove è custodito il Sacro Graal. Ma l’uomo che l’ha trovata, il professor Henry Jones (Sean Connery) - il massimo esperto del Sacro Graal nonché padre di Indy - è misteriosamente scomparso. Indiana “Junior” si precipita così a Venezia alla ricerca del padre, e trova la bella dottoressa Elsa Schneider (Alison Doody), ma i due se la dovranno vedere con i Templari, pronti a tutto pur di difendere il miracoloso e leggendario calice. Quando uno di loro rivela a Jones che il padre viene tenuto prigioniero in un castello in Austria, Indy e Elsa corrono a liberarlo. Insieme al fido Sallah (John Rhys-Davis), i due correranno e cavalcheranno le grandi dune del deserto della Turchia, attraverseranno la Germania braccati dai nazisti, affrontando insieme ogni genere di spettacolari e rischiose avventure, con la consueta spavalderia e coraggio comuni a padre e figlio, a bordo di barche, auto, cavalli, cammelli e persino uno Zeppelin, fino a confrontarsi con l’avventura più grande, al cospetto del calice conteso dai nazisti, giunti sul posto. Ritmo incalzante, spirito eroico, ironia, dialoghi arguti e spettacolarità alle stelle sono gli ingredienti ottimamente dosati da Spielberg e rafforzati da un montaggio incalzante e da effetti speciali ancor più spettacolari (made in ILM), esaltati dall’ormai mitica colonna sonora di John Williams. Successo scontato per l’archeologo spavaldo e affascinante: non rimane che prepararsi all’ultima avventura, attesa per il 2005.

è l’episodio più nuovo, ma il trattamento è lo stesso riservato agli altri episodi: audio italiano in stereo surround e audio inglese multicanale, con un menù animato che ricalca stilisticamente quello di tutta la trilogia e una qualità video davvero buona. Partiamo proprio dai menù, l’aspetto che ci è piaciuto meno. La grafica, anche se animata, sembra davvero banale: un filtro di stilizzazione applicato alle immagini e animazioni un po’ forzate e poco piacevoli. Considerata l’importanza del titolo, sicuramente qualcosa di meglio si riusciva a fare. Il puntatore poi non è troppo visibile sui TV di piccole dimensioni, e potrebbe creare qualche problema. Ma passiamo alla parte che forse più interessa, quella della qualità vera e propria. Il film è il più recente dei tre e la qualità video lo dimostra: al di là del restauro perfetto la qualità è davvero elevata, così come la compressione. Ottimo il bilanciamento delle tinte, le sfumature sulle alte luci e la profondità del nero: sembra veramente un film girato pochi anni fa. Sotto il fattore della compressione riscontriamo una situazione media: solo in qualche occasione particolarmente difficile vengono alla luce piccoli artefatti di compressione, ma non si tratta, come potrebbero credere molti, di situazioni a bassa luminosità, bensì alcune scene in interno e soprattutto sugli sfondi. L’esempio più lampante è l’aula di università ai primi capitoli, dove sullo sfondo del dottor Jones percepiamo un piccolo brulichio di pixel. Nulla comunque di allarmante, anzi, un quadro generale davvero notevole. Altra grande sorpresa è rappresentata dall’audio: anche se si tratta di semplice surround è molto coinvolgente e ben codificato, pulito e perfettamente equalizzato. La separazione dei canali è notevole, anche per quanto riguarda il reparto posteriore, non discreto. Basta ascoltare le sequenze finali, con la scena del combattimento aereo, per realizzare come la codifica matriciale viene sfruttata al massimo delle sue potenzialità. Si percepisce subito che non si tratta di una traccia recente, è un po’ secca e asciutta, tuttavia è davvero godibile e non presta il fianco a critiche. Le differenze con la versione originale non sono marcatissime, anche se forse in questo caso forse il fronte posteriore gode di un impatto maggiore rispetto a quanto accade con i primi due film. La traccia inglese gode di dialoghi un po’ più pieni, merito indubbiamente della presa diretta e di un controllo migliore sulle basse frequenze.
